Check list to grade the running gear of an accident vehicle
When repairing support elements used to guide the wheels in collision vehicles, there could be damage or deformations to the running gear that go unnoticed. These unnoticed damages can result in serious damage to the later functioning of the vehicle. Therefore, independently from the wheel alignment that has to be carried out, the components listed here must be checked, following the procedure and order described. If no difference was found with the specifications when checking the wheel alignment, this means that no deformation was found in the running gear.
Visual inspection and testing the working of the steering system
t  Visual inspection of deformations and cracks
t  Checking the play in the bar joints and the steering box
t  Visual inspection to check for damage to the dustguard and grease bellows
t  Examine the electrical and hydraulic conduits and the hoses looking for wear due to friction, cuts and bends
t  Check whether the hydraulic pipes, the bolted seals and the steering box are free of leaks
t  Check whether the steering box and the hoses are firmly attached.
t  Check the proper functioning of the complete steering angle to both sides. The steering wheel should need uniform force to turn and the movement should not be obstructed.
Visual inspection and testing the working of the running gear
l  The tests specified below must be carried out in the following order
t  Check all the components in the assembly overview for deformations, cracks and other damage
t  Replace the damaged parts
t  The wheels should only be aligned using Seat approved equipment.
Visual inspection and check of the working of the wheels and tyres
t  Check the balance and concentricity
t  Check whether the tyres have cuts or marks from knocks on the sides and profile
t  Check the tyre pressure. Tyre pressures are given on the inside of the fuel tank cap.
t  Replace the tyre or tyres if safety is endangered.
If the rim and/or the tyre is damaged, the tyre must be replaced. Also when, from the description of the accident and the damage caused to the vehicle, it can be deduced that there may be damage not noticeable at first sight.
Another criterion for deciding is the age of the tyre: Tyres should not be older than 6 years.
Visual check and operation test for the vehicle in general
Also check other vehicle systems, for example:
t  Checking the brake system including ABS
t  Visual inspection and testing the working of the exhaust system and protection of the occupants
The verification, adjustment and specification values are set out in the corresponding Workshop Manual / ELSA.
The revision described here for accident vehicles refers to the running gear and is not meant as a complete guide for the general vehicle.
Check of the electronic systems on the vehicle
For safety-relevant systems such as ABS/EDS, airbag, electronically controlled chassis systems, electro-mechanical or electro-hydraulic servo-steering as well as other servo-system for the driver it is necessary to use thevehicle diagnosis, measuring and information system -VAS 505X - to check whether a DTC is stored in the DTC memory. If a fault has been registered in the memories of the mentioned systems, repair these errors according to the instructions in the Workshop Manual/ELSA. When the repair has been carried out, the affected systems must be verified again for possible errors in the memories to ensure that the function is now stable.
