Emergency release of gear selection mechanism from position “P”
Emergency release of gear selection mechanism from position “P”
The Electro-magnet for locking the selector lever -N110- locks the selector lever in the position “P”. The selector lever may only be taken out of position “P” if, with the ignition and/or the starter motor connected, the brake pedal is kept depressed and the button on the selector lever handle is pressed in; see Gear selection mechanism: checking → Chapter.
If there are faults in the supply voltage of the solenoid for the selector lever locking (flat battery or defective fuse), or if the solenoid is faulty, the selector lever can not be taken out of position “P”, that is, the vehicle cannot be moved because the parking lock is engaged.
In this case:
–  Check fuses → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
–  Check the battery voltage → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.
If the selector lever can not be taken out of position “P” in spite of having carried out the fault location, it is possible to proceed to the emergency solenoid release. If the selector lever returns to position “P”, it will again be locked in “P”.
Carry out the emergency release:
–  Remove the gear selection mechanism cover → Chapter.
  Note
When removing the cover, take care not to damage or scratch it.

–  Release the selector lever locking solenoid -A- by pressing the lever -B- inwards with a screwdriver -arrow- and hold in this position.
  Note
The screwdriver from the vehicle tool set may be used for this operation.
  WARNING
The gear selection mechanism may only be replaced as a whole, that is, if any of the components are damaged, the entire mechanism must be replaced.
–  With the lever released, now press the button on the handle and take the selector lever out of position “P”.
  Note
However, if the selector lever returns to posiiton “P”, the solenoid will mechanically lock it in position “P” again, and it will be necessary to unlock it again.
