Visual inspection of the exterior, the connections and the correct seating of the battery before taking measurements.
  Caution
t  The battery may be damaged if it is not secured correctly.
t  Damage caused by vibrations or jolts reduce the useful life of the battery; this represents an explosion risk! The grill plates may be damaged and the attachment strap could damage the battery casing.
t  Check that the battery is properly fitted and if necessary tighten the securing bolt to prescribed torque .
The visual check is used to ascertain:
t  If battery housing is damaged If the battery casing is damaged, electrolyte may spill. Spilled electrolyte may cause serious damage to the vehicle. The parts of the vehicle affected by spilled electrolyte must therefore be treated with a product to neutralize the acid or with soap solution immediately.
t  If the poles of the battery (battery cable connections) have deteriorated. If the battery poles are damaged, the necessary connection to the terminals is no longer guaranteed. Also for the battery pole terminal connections take into account the necessity of applying the tightening torque specified in the Repairs Manual „Electrical system“ of the corresponding vehicle. If the terminals are not correctly connected and tightened then they may burn the cables. This could cause considerable errors in the electrical system. The safe functioning of the vehicle is no longer guaranteed.
