Idle Speed: Adjustments

CARBURETED MODELS

1.

Start and operate engine until normal operating temperature is obtained.

2.

Disconnect and plug purge hose from intake manifold.

3.

Install a suitable tachometer onto engine as per manufacturer's instructions.

4.

Note tachometer reading. If curb idle speed obtained is not as specified, turn idle speed adjusting screw, until specified curb idle speed is obtained.

FUEL INJECTED MODELS

Multi Point Fuel Injection

1.

Start and operate engine until normal operating temperature is obtained. On 1988 models, run engine at 2500 RPM for one minute after normal
operating temperature is reached.

2.

Disconnect and plug purge hose from intake manifold.

3.

Install a suitable tachometer onto engine as per manufacturer's instructions.

4.

Ensure auxiliary air valve is completely closed.

5.

Note tachometer reading. If curb idle speed obtained is not as specified, turn idle speed adjusting screw located on throttle body Fig. 1 until
specified curb idle speed is obtained.

Single Point Fuel Injection

1.

Start engine and run until it reaches normal operating temperature.

2.

Turn A/C OFF, place gearshift lever in N or P position and note idle speed.

3.

If idle speed exceeds 800 RPM, proceed as follows:

a. Disconnect air control valve electrical connector at throttle chamber.
b. Adjust idle speed to 600 ± 50 RPM on 1985-87 models, or 500 ± 50 on 1988 models, by turning idle adjusting screw.
c. Connect air control valve electrical connector and ensure idle speed is 700 ± 100 RPM.

4.

If idle speed is less than 600 RPM, connector has faulty contact or harness is broken.
