CLICKING NOISE FROM THE HEATER MODE DOOR ACTUATOR

This complaint can be duplicated by cycling the mode control panel from the vent position to one of the following positions: Bi-level, Heat,
Heat/Defrost, and off.

This noise occurs because the actuator will over travel the electrical contacts in the motor housing causing it to reverse its direction. It will keep cycling
back and forth until it stops on the contact.

This condition is caused by one or both of the following:

(A)

Loose, worn-out, or misadjusted linkage.

(B)

The door actuator motor torque is on the upper limits of the specifications.

To correct this condition you must first check and repair as necessary all the linkage for looseness and verify that the mode door actuator control rod
adjustment is correct. This adjustment can be found in the 1992 service manual section 4-6 page 23. If the linkage is tight and adjusted correctly use the
following procedures to correct the condition.

(1)

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

(2)

Remove the lower instrument panel cover below the steering column.

(3)

Locate the mode door actuator wiring harness and find the white with a blue tracer and blue with a black tracer wires going to connector B-89 at
the motor. Install the resistor assembly (part number 72081AA260) to these wires using the tap-in connectors and secure them with electrical tape.

(4)

Using a plastic tie-wrap secure the resistor assembly to the harness.

(5)

Check for normal operation of the mode door actuator and reinstall the lower panel.
