Ball Joint: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the front of the vehicle.
3. Remove the front wheels.
4. Pull the cotter pin from the ball stud and remove the castle nut.
5. Remove the ball stud from the transverse link.
6. Remove the bolt securing the ball joint to the housing and remove the ball joint from the housing.

Installation

1. Install ball joint to housing and torque the mount bolt to 38 - 50 Nm (28 - 37 ft.lbs).

Caution:  Do NOT apply grease to the tapered portion of the ball stud.

2. Connect the ball joint to the transverse link and torque the castle nut to 39 Nm (29 ft.lbs).
3. Torque the castle nut up to 60° more until a slot in the cast nut is lined up with the hole in the ball end. Insert a new cotter pin and bend it around

the castle nut.

4. Install front wheels and lower vehicle to the ground.
5. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
