Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair

    Refer to Fig. 1 when performing the following procedure.

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.

2.

Remove hub caps, then unlock axle nut.

3.

Using a suitable socket, remove axle nut. Do not remove axle nut with wheel installed.

4.

Remove ball joint retaining bolts, then disconnect ABS sensor from knuckle.

5.

Disconnect brake hose clamp from strut, then scribe alignment mark on camber adjusting bolt and remove strut mounting nuts. Do not remove
strut bolts at this time.

6.

Disconnect brake caliper from knuckle and secure to strut with wire.

7.

Remove drive shaft from knuckle. If it is difficult to remove, use remover 926470000 and plate 28099PA110 or their equivalents.

8.

Remove brake rotor from hub. If rotor is seized, install two 8 mm bolts in screw holes to remove.

9.

Using a suitable puller, disconnect tie rod from knuckle, then remove knuckle and hub assembly.

10.

Support knuckle and hub assembly using hub stand 28099PA080 or equivalent, then attach hub remover front 28099PA040 or equivalent to
knuckle and drive hub out of knuckle.

11.

If inner bearing race remains in hub, remove using a suitable tool.

12.

Remove brake backing plate from knuckle, then using a suitable screwdriver, remove inner and outer oil seals.

13.

Remove snap ring, then support knuckle using housing stand front 28099PA010 or equivalent.

14.

Using bearing installer front 28099PA000 or equivalent, press inner race to drive out bearing. Do not remove outer race unless it is damaged.

15.

Using housing stand front 28099PA010 and bearing installer front 28099PA000 or their equivalents, press outer race to install new bearing.

16.

Install snap ring, then using oil seal installer front 28099PA030 or equivalent, press inner oil seal until it contacts circlip.

17.

Using oil seal installer front 28099PA030 or equivalent, press outer oil seal until it contacts bottom of housing.

18.

Install brake backing plate, attach hub assembly to hub stand, then using hub installer front, press hub assembly into knuckle.

19.

Assemble steering knuckle assembly to vehicle by reversing steps 1 through 9.
