About the Sidekick
The Sidekick is the North American name for the first-generation Suzuki Vitara (Escudo in Japan), on sale for the 1989 model year. North American Sidekicks were built at CAMI in Ingersoll, Ontario, a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors, on the same line as the almost identical Geo Tracker. It was replaced by the Vitara and Grand Vitara for 1999.
What these manuals cover
- 1989–1992: the 1.3-litre four (G13) and the 1.6-litre 8-valve four (G16A) with throttle-body injection.
- 1996–1998: the 16-valve 1.6-litre four in two and four-door models, and the Sport's 1.8-litre 16-valve four (J18).
Tip: the Geo Tracker and the 1998 Chevrolet Tracker are the Sidekick's twins, built on the same production line.
