Steering Shaft: Service and Repair

REMOVAL 

1. Turn steering wheel so that vehicle's wheels (front tires) are at straight-ahead position.
2. Turn ignition switch to "LOCK" position and remove key.

3. Pull off floor carpet at the foot of steering shaft and remove steering joint cover.
4. Make alignment marks (4) on upper joint (3) and lower joint (2), and lower joint (2) and pinion shaft (5) for guide at reinstallation. Remove 

steering shaft joint bolts and then remove steering shaft lower joint.

CAUTION: 
Never turn steering wheel while steering shaft lower joint is removed.
Should it have been turned and contact coil (on combination switch) have got out of its centered position, it needs to be centered again. Also,
turning steering wheel more than about two and a half turns will break contact coil.

INSTALLATION 

1. Align flat part of lower joint shaft with bolt hole of upper joint. Then insert lower joint shaft into upper joint with aligning marks (3) if marked.
2. Be sure that front wheels and steering wheel are in straight-forward state and insert lower joint (1) into steering pinion shaft (2) with aligning

marks (3) if marked.
