Flex Plate: Testing and Inspection
Flexplate/Torque Converter Vibration Test

You discover steel particles or clutch lining material in the fluid filter or on the magnet, when no internal parts in the unit are worn or damaged.
This condition indicates that lining material came from the converter.
Do not replace the torque converter if you discover any of the following symptoms:

The fluid has an odor or the fluid is discolored, even though metal or clutch facing particles are not present.

Transmission failure did not display evidence of damaged or worn internal parts, steel particles or clutch plate lining material in the unit and inside
the fluid filter.

The vehicle has been exposed to high mileage only. An exception may exist where the lining of the torque converter clutch dampener plate has
seen excess wear by vehicles operated in heavy and/or constant traffic, such as taxi, delivery, or police use.
Drive Plate (Flexplate) Deflection
Inspect the drive/flexplate assembly in order to verify that the deflection/lateral runout is within specification as listed. If lateral runout is greater than
the maximum allowed specification, replace the drive/flexplate assembly.
Specification
Lateral runout of the drive/flexplate assembly must be less than 0.2 mm (0.008 in).
CAUTION:
When installing the TCC to the drive/flexplate, make sure to use specified TCC mount bolts. DO NOT use longer bolts. Using longer bolts
will result in deformation of the TCC cover and damage to the TCC lock up clutch lining. TCC lock up malfunction will eventually occur,
resulting in a need to replace the TCC assembly.
NOTE:
If abnormal wear or witness marks are present on the torque converter clutch (TCC) sleeve, or on the fluid pump assembly, replace the TCC and the
automatic transmission fluid pump assembly.
