Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Axle Shaft, Conventional Fixed/Floating
All Wheel Drive
REMOVAL
1.
Remove rear wheels, then the brake drums.
2.
Remove backing plate mounting nuts.
3.
On models equipped with ABS, Remove ABS speed sensor.
4.
Using slide hammer No. 09520-00031 or equivalent, remove rear axle shaft. Ensure care is taken not to damage oil seal when removing shaft.
5.
Disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder, then remove backing plate.
6.
Remove end gasket from rear axle housing.
INSTALLATION
1.
Apply suitable sealer to both sides of end gasket and retainer gasket.
2.
Install end gasket on axle housing with notch facing downward.
3.
On models equipped with ABS, install ABS speed sensor.
4.
Install backing plate on axle housing, then connect brake line to wheel cylinder.
5.
Install retainer gasket on axle shaft.
6.
Install axle shaft, then the retaining nuts. Torque nuts to 48 ft. lbs.
7.
Install brake drums, then bleed brake system.
8.
Install wheels.

Remove rear axle hub as outlined previously.
2.
Remove brake hose from shock absorber.
