Chassis Alignment

The following points must be noted before chassis alignment:

  • Use of the specified disc wheels as well as the tyre sizes.
  • Perfect condition of the disc wheels and the wheel bearing units.
  • Tyre tread uniform and in good condition.
  • Correct tyre inflation pressure on each axle, left and right identical - values see the respective Owner's Manual for the vehicle or the "Inspection System" or "Inspection System/Service Plan" brochure applicable to the model year.
  • No visible damage to chassis (no play in track rods and ball joints, chassis suspension).
  • Regulations and instructions issued by chassis alignment system manufacturer.

The following operations must be performed before chassis alignment:

  • Half fill fuel tank.
  • Put vehicle into alignment position.
  • Load both front seats with 70 kg.
  • Put steering in straight ahead position.
  • Push down on vehicle suspension several times to enable the suspension to adopt its starting position.

  Measure

Using the computer-aided chassis alignment system, establish "actual values", see "Technical Data - Chassis Adjustment Values" in group "E" and/or from MY '99 in the respective "Chassis Adjustment Values" brochure valid for the model year for the "required values". The instructions for users and stipulations of the manufacturers of computer-aided chassis alignment systems must be observed. Print-out of the vehicle and chassis data.

Note:   Since semi-independent suspension is used on this vehicle, it is not possible to adjust the position of the rear axle. If the "actual values" do not correspond to the "required values", the fixing points of the rear axle on the underbody of the vehicle must be checked and corrected if necessary - see operation "Quick measuring method" in group "A".

If the fastening points of the rear axle on the vehicle underbody are correct, a precise alignment of the rear axle should be undertaken with KM-6002. The alignment of the rear axle is described in the operation "Rear Axle, Remove and Install". After aligning the rear axle, the vehicle must be realigned.

If, despite correct alignment of the rear axle, the "actual values" do not correspond to the "required values", the rear axle must be replaced.
