Hydraulic System, Charge and Bleed (EHPS Gen.
I)
Caution
Do not allow the electro-hydraulic supply unit to run dry.
Drained fluid must not be re-used. Special fluid shall be used
to lubricate the hydraulic system – see "Technical Data
– Hydraulic Steering Gear".
Note: Use a funnel
with a flexible pipe to fill the hydraulic system.
The fluid reservoir is integrated in the electro-hydraulic
supply unit and is positioned, on LHD vehicles, on the right-hand
side of the engine compartment between engine and bulkhead and on
RHD vehicles, on the left-hand side of the engine compartment
between transmission and bulkhead.
Electro-hydraulic supply units from
two different suppliers can be installed. The main difference is in
the shape of the power-steering fluid reservoir:
Round Power Steering Fluid Reservoir = TRW
|
Angular Power Steering Fluid Reservoir = Delphi
|
Filling and bleeding of the hydraulic system is described
separately below.
Hydraulic System, Fill and Bleed (TRW):
Caution
Fill and bleed the hydraulic system at room temperature. Leave
hydraulic systems at operating temperature to cool down to room
temperature.
Use dipstick in screw-on cover (1) of fluid reservoir to check
fluid level.
Inspect
Unscrew fluid reservoir closure cap. Remove fluid screen (3)
from fluid reservoir and check for impurities. Clean carefully if
necessary. Replace fluid screen in fluid reservoir, ensuring that
the recess in the fluid reservoir and the guide on the fluid screen
align (arrows).
Fill with special fluid up to the "MAX" mark or the upper edge
of the knurling (2) on the fluid reservoir dipstick. To prevent
overfilling, unscrew closure cap with dipstick and check
repeatedly. When finished, screw on closure cap.
|
|
Start and stop the engine three times when bleeding the
electro-hydraulic supply unit. Pause for a short while between
starts.
To bleed the hydraulic system, start the engine and turn the
steering wheel from the left stop to the right stop three times,
while the engine is running.
Switch off engine and check the fluid level, if necessary top up
to the upper edge of the knurling on the fluid dipstick.
Check the power steering for correct operation and possible
noise factor, by starting the engine and turning the steering wheel
from the left stop to the right stop several times.
Visually inspect all power steering connection points for
leaks.
Hydraulic System, Fill and Bleed (Delphi):
Caution
Fill and bleed the hydraulic system at room temperature. Leave
hydraulic systems at operating temperature to cool down to room
temperature.
Use the dipstick on the fluid screen to check the fluid
level.
Inspect
Unscrew closure cap (1) from fluid reservoirs. Remove the fluid
screen with the fluid dipstick (2) from the fluid reservoirs and
check for impurities, clean carefully if necessary. Replace fluid
filter with fluid dipstick in the fluid reservoir; ensure proper
seating.
Fill fluid reservoir with special fluid until fluid reaches mark
(3). To prevent overfilling, remove fluid screen and dipstick and
check repeatedly. When finished, screw on closure cap.

|
Bleed the hydraulic system by starting the engine and turning
the steering wheel twice from the left stop to the right stop,
while the engine is running.
Switch off engine and check the fluid level, if necessary top up
to mark.
Check the power steering for correct operation and possible
noise factor, by starting the engine and turning the steering wheel
from the left stop to the right stop several times.
Visually inspect all power steering connection points for
leaks.
