Circuit/System Description

The body control module (BCM) controls the windscreen washer fluid pump based on an input from the wiper/washer switch. The BCM monitors the washer switch through the wiper/washer switch signal circuit. When the wash switch is closed, ground is supplied to the windscreen washer switch signal circuit. When this is the case, the BCM will command the windscreen washer fluid pump and the low speed wipers on.

On some vehicles warning information (wash fluid low) will be conveyed via the GMLAN to the controls and displays subsystem (responsible for display). This subsystem will provide visual feedback to the customer while in the RUN power mode.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Windscreen Washer Switch parameter while activating the S82 Windscreen Wiper/Washer Switch. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.
  2. If the value does not change, refer to Multifunction Switch Malfunction.
  3. Operate the windscreen washer using the S82 Windscreen Wiper/Washer Switch. Verify that the G24 Windscreen Washer Pump activates. Verify the washer fluid reservoir is filled up.
  4. If the G24 Windshield Washer Pump does not run, refer to Washer Pump Malfunction.
If the G24 Windscreen Washer Pump does not shut off, test or replace the KR11 Windscreen Washer Pump Relay.

Circuit/System Testing

Note:  You must perform the Circuit/System Verification before proceeding with Circuit/System Testing.

Multifunction Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X3 harness connector at the K9 Body Control Module.
  2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the S82 Windscreen Wiper/Washer Switch signal circuit terminal 5 and the K9 Body Control Module terminal 25 while activating the wash function.
  3. If greater than the specified value, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the S82 Windscreen Wiper/Washer Switch.
  4. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the K9 Body Control Module.

Washer Pump Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the G24 Windscreen Washer Pump.
  2. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 1 and the ground circuit terminal 2.
  3. If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the KR11 Windscreen Washer Pump Relay.
  4. Verify a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal 1 and the ground circuit terminal 2 while activating the wash function.
  5. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance.
  6. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the G24 Windscreen Washer Pump.

Low Washer Fluid Indicator Malfunction

  1. Verify the washer fluid reservoir is filled up.
  2. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B118B Windshield Washer Fluid Level Switch.
  3. Test for less than 5 Ω between the ground terminal 2 and ground.
  4. If greater than the specified value, test the ground circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance.
  5. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the P16 fInstrument Cluster.
  6. Test for less than 5 Ω between the signal circuit terminal 1 at the B118B Windscreen Washer Fluid Level Switch harness connector and signal terminal 29 at the P16 Instrument Cluster harness connector.
  7. If greater than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance.
  8. Reconnect all harness connectors.
  9. Ignition ON, command the Driver Information Center Segment test ON and OFF with the scan tool, verify that the low washer fluid indicator display reacts to ON and OFF positions.
  10. If the low washer fluid indicator display stays always ON or always OFF, replace the P16 Instrument Cluster.
  11. If the low washer fluid indicator display changes between ON and OFF, test or replace the B118B Windshield Washer Fluid Level Switch.

Component Testing

Multifunction Switch Test

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the S82 Windscreen Wiper/Washer Switch.
  2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the switch terminals 2 and 5 while activating the washer function.
  3. If not the specified value, replace the S82 Windscreen Wiper/Washer Switch.

Washer Pump Test

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the G24 Windscreen Washer Pump.
  2. Install a 10A fused jumper wire between the control terminal 1 and 12V. Install a jumper wire between the ground terminal 2 and ground.
  3. Verify the G24 Windscreen Washer Pump is activated.
  4. If the G24 Windshield Washer Pump does not activate, replace the G24 Windshield Washer Pump.

Relay Test

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the KR11 Windscreen Washer Pump Relay.
  2. Test for 60-200 Ω between terminals 85 and 86.
  3. If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the KR11 Windscreen Washer Pump Relay.
  4. Test for infinite resistance between the following terminals:
  5. •  30 and 86
    •  30 and 87
    •  30 and 85
    •  85 and 87
If not the specified value, replace the KR11 Windscreen Washer Pump Relay.
  6. Test for less than 5 Ω between terminals 30 and 87A.
  7. If greater than the specified range, replace the KR11 Windscreen Washer Pump Relay.
  8. Install a 10 A fused jumper wire between relay terminal 85 and 12 V. Install a jumper wire between relay terminal 86 and ground. Test for less than 5 Ω between terminals 30 and 87.
  9. If greater than the specified range, replace the KR11 Windscreen Washer Pump Relay.

Low Washer Fluid Switch Test

  1. Ignition OFF, remove the B118B Windshield Washer Fluid Level Switch.
  2. B118B Windscreen Washer Fluid Level Switch open, test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal 1 and the ground terminal 2.
  3. If not the specified value, replace the B118B Windscreen Washer Fluid Level Switch.
  4. B118B Windscreen Washer Fluid Level Switch closed, test for less than 5 Ω between the signal circuit terminal 1 and the ground terminal 2.
