Rear Axle Aligment, Check

Camber and Toe-in, Check

The following prerequisites must be met to ensure accurate measurement of alignment:

1.    Tread on all tyres uniform and in good condition.

2.    Tyre pressure must be equal on both left and right sides and correspond to values for maximum loading. See "Technical Data", group E.

3.    The rim of each disc wheel must be in satisfactory condition.

4.    Prepare vehicle for measurement:

Load each of the front seats with 70 kg/154 lbs.

Ensure that fuel tank is half full.

Stabilize springs of vehicle several times.

If this preparatory measure is not performed, the camber angle measured will be too great, since the rear axle will not have assumed its normal position.

Note:

When using axle alignment turntables which cannot withstand lateral forces, the vehicle must first be rolled back by about 1 metre (3 ft.) and then rolled forward again.

Check "actual value" of rear axle with optical axle alignment tester. (Refer to Technical Data for "prescribed value").

Complete the alignment measuring card.

Correction of camber and toe-in is not possible. If there are variations, the rear axle body or wheel spindle is to be checked for possible damages.

Recommendation for Rear Axle Checking

If, when measuring rear axle, a too large deviation of wheel camber or toe-in is measured or one-sided wearing of tyres is noticed, check each spindle - if necessary replace - see operation "Wheel Spindle, Remove and Install or Replace One".

Re-measure the vehicle on an axle alignment stand.

If the toe-in or deviations in camber are still too large, check the rear axle body - if necessary replace - see operation "Rear Axle, Remove and Install or Replace".

Install the previously replaced wheel spindle in the new rear axle body.
