Gearshift Lever, Remove and Install

Remove

Put gearshift lever into neutral position (not in any gear).

Remove console - if installed - from transmission tunnel.

UP to MY '91:

Lever out covers and unscrew fastening bolts underneath (arrow).

As of MY '91

Changed console with only one fastening bolt

Remove gearshift lever bellows from transmission tunnel and turn up bellows on gearshift lever.

Unbolt mounting of gearshift lever from bearing insert (arrows).

Pull gearshift lever up to stop on shift tube.

Press ball bearing (with 2nd hand in transmission tunnel cutout) upward against the spring pressure and turn it to the side and remove it from the gearshift lever (turning lock).

Shown in illus. B 5354 on removed gearshift lever.

Remove gearshift lever and bearing parts from bearing insert.

Install

Insert gearshift lever into shift tube in tunnel cutout.

Turn ball bearing (pressure spring, pressure ring, cover) onto gear shift lever until it catches (turning lock).

Bolt down parts for mounting of gearshift lever on bearing insert 16 Nm/12 lbf. ft.

Before mounting, coat the following with Silicon Grease 19 70 206 (90 167 353): inner and outer sliding surfaces of ball bearing, pivot ball on gearshift lever, and both stop shoulders for gearshift lever.

Use new self-locking nuts.

Mount gearshift lever bellows to tunnel cutout.

Push bellows up to stop on lever tube.

High bellows side or arrow is to the front (arrow).

Fasten console - if installed - to transmission tunnel.

Screw in fastening bolts and clip in covers.

As of MY '91

Screw in fastening bolt and clip in cover.
