Rear Springs, Replace

Caution

The rear springs should always be replaced in pairs.

  Remove

Remove rear wheels. Remove retaining plate for brake pressure hoses from semi-trailing arm. Pull out brake pressure hoses with brake lines slightly.

Vehicles with vehicle level control: Suspend connection rod (1) for vehicle level control sensor from semi-trailing arm.

Detach exhaust system from vehicle underbody. Remove retainers for damping rings and remove damping rings (2) (saloon: 2 per front muffler, 4 for rear muffler; saloon: 2 per front muffler, 3 for rear muffler).

Fasten exhaust system about 30 cm from the vehicle underbody with wire (3).

Place hydraulic jack under left or right semi-trailing arm and raise. Remove relevant shock absorber (1). Lower hydraulic jack.

Unclip and disconnect wiring harness plug (3) for both wheel sensors from vehicle sub-frame.

Use KM-485 to place hydraulic jack under rear axle sub-frame. Unscrew fastening screws from rear damper blocks (2) on vehicle sub-frame. Use hydraulic jack to lower rear axle until rear springs can be removed.

Remove rear springs (4) and rubber dampers (5) from vehicle underbody and semi-trailing arm.

  Install

Place rubber dampers on rear springs, the rubber damper with the longer guide (1) is installed on top.

Attach rear springs (2) to vehicle underbody and semi-trailing arm.

Note:   The original springs are each marked at one spring end with the last four digits of the part number. If necessary, remove paint at the spring end and note the relevant part number when replacing the springs.

When inserting the rear springs, ensure that the upper spring end (3) points to rear in direction of travel (arrow), otherwise humming noises may occur during operation of vehicle.

  Install

Lift differential with hydraulic lifter and install rear damping blocks (4) on vehicle underbody – tightening torque 65 Nm / 48 lbf. ft.

Place hydraulic jack under left or right semi-trailing arm and raise until relevant shock absorber can be installed – ensure that vehicle is not lifted from jacking points of lifting platform. Attach shock absorber to semi-trailing arm – tightening torque 110 Nm / 81 lbf. ft.

Connect wiring harness plug (1) for both wheel sensors and clip onto vehicle underbody. Attach exhaust system in brackets on vehicle underbody and secure.

In vehicles with vehicle level control: hang linkage (2) for vehicle level control on right-hand control arm.

Insert brake lines in bracket on semi-trailing arms and secure with retaining plates. Mount rear wheels – tightening torque 110 Nm / 81 lbf. ft.

  Inspect

Vehicles with vehicle level control: Check function of vehicle level control – see operation "Automatic Vehicle Level Control, Check".
