Crankshaft Bearing Play, Check (Determine
Crankshaft Beating Play with Plastigage)
Inspect
Bearing play – crankshaft bearing cap removed.
Caution
Clean crankshaft journal and crankshaft bearing shell and
lubricate slightly so that thread does not tear when bearing cap is
removed. Do not turn crankshaft.

Measure
With "Plastigage" (deformable plastic thread).
Cut thread to width of bearing and place across crankshaft
bearing journal and bearing shell (arrow). Fit crankshaft bearing
shell with torque – tightening torque 25 Nm / 18 lbf. ft. +
50°.
Note: The bolts can
be reused for checking crankshaft bearing clearance.
Remove
Remove crankshaft bearing cap.
Inspect
Compare width of squashed plastic thread (arrow) with measuring
scale.
"Plastigage" is available for various measuring ranges.
Permitted crankshaft bearing play: 0.020 to 0.058 mm.
Note: When reading
the value, do not confuse millimetres with inches on the measuring
scale.
Torque/angle method
Install crankshaft bearing caps with new bolts at cylinder block
– 25 Nm / 18 lbf. ft. + 50°.
