Piston Rings, Remove and Install

  Remove

Carefully remove piston rings with piston ring pliers.

Note:   Install piston rings in correct order and installation positions. The "TOP" markings on the piston rings should face upwards.

Remove carbon deposits from piston ring groove with broken piston ring ground to a wedge.

  Inspect

Check piston ring vertical play with feeler gauge in piston ring groove.

Upper piston ring groove:

Measurement not necessary.

Centre piston ring groove:

0.040 to 0.088 mm

Lower piston ring groove:

0.050 to 0.065 mm

  Inspect

Measure piston ring gap play: Insert piston ring in the cylinder and slide in further with the piston.

Check piston ring joint play using a feeler gauge, inserting piston ring at narrowest point in cylinder bore. Joint play: 0.20 to max. 0.40 mm.

  Install

Mark "TOP" faces upwards, to piston head.

1. Double-sided key stone ring.
2. Tapered compression ring
3. Double bevelled ring with spiral-type expander

Carefully insert piston rings with piston ring pliers. Slightly coat piston and piston rings with oil. Offset piston ring gaps by approx. 120°, but do not arrange over the piston pin eye. The piston ring gap of the channel oil ring must be offset by 180° relative to the opening of the inner worm spring.
