X 20 XEV DOHC Petrol Engine

This engine is a member of the new ECOTEC engine generation from Opel / Vauxhall, Its design corresponds to that of the C 18 XE DOHC petrol engine from the Astra - F.

Its most important features are:

-      4 valves per cylinder

-      Direct ignition

-      Simtec 56.1 injection system

-      Knock control

-      Electronically controlled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)

-      Secondary air injection (AIR = Air Injection Reactor)

Under certain operating conditions, an electric fan (in the left wheel housing) feeds air to the exhaust valves, improving hydrocarbon combustion. ]n addition, this process increases the exhaust temperature, leading to a faster catalytic converter response.

The fan operates at approx. 18, 000 rpm and is controlled by the injection system. It is only switched on when the engine is cold.

After approx. 60 sec. the fan is switched on again.

Despite its higher output and torque, the X 20 XEV DOHC petrol engine's fuel consumption is 4.5% lower than that of the similarly sized X 20 SE OHC petrol engine.
