DIS Ignition System

The DIS ignition system for the Motronic M 2, 8.1 consists of a DIS ignition module (3 x 2 dual spark ignition coils),

The DIS ignition module is actuated directly by three final stages in the Motronic control unit.

Function:

In the DIS ignition module, 2 sparks are induced simultaneously This means that one spark plug ignites while the cylinder is in the power stroke (main spark), while the other spark plug ignites in the exhaust stroke of the 360° displaced cylinder (backup spark). When the crankshaft has rotated 360°, each cylinder is two strokes further on in the cycle and the spark plugs ignite again, with reversed results.

In a six cylinder engine, the three dual spark ignition coils required ignite at a rate offset by 120°. A reference mark sensor on the crankshaft ensures correct actuation of each ignition coil and calculation of the firing angle. Synchronization of the system is therefore guaranteed.

The Motronic M 2.8.1 uses a so - called 3 x 2 dual spark ignition coil, i. e. three dual spark ignition coils are located in one housing.

·    Service

The DIS ignition module (3 x 2 dual spark ignition coil) can be checked using the TECH 1 actuator diagnosis.

Static checking of the 3 x 2 dual spark ignition coil is carried out by measuring the winding resistances and the connection voltage.

Winding resistances in the temperature range 0 to 100 °C / 32 to 212  F:

Primary:

Ter. 1 to Ter. 4 or Ter. 2 to Ter. 4 or Ter. 3 to Ter. 4

0.45 to 0.65W

Secondary:

Ter. cyl. 1 to Ter. cyl. 4 or

Ter. cyl. 3 to Ter, cyl. 6 or

Ter. cyl. 2 to Ter. cyl, 5

11 to 16 kW
