Engine at operating temperature (oil temperature >= 80 °C).

  Remove

Remove front toothed belt cover – see operation "Front Toothed Belt Cover, Remove and Install".

Disconnect spark plug connector, remove spark plugs with KM-194-E. Disconnect wiring harness plug (3) from intake air temperature sensor and wiring harness plug (2) from hot film mass air flowmeter. Remove air intake hose (1) from throttle body and air cleaner housing. Remove oil filler opening closure cap, closure cap for coolant compensation tank, oil dipstick.

  Adjust

Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation to "1st Cylinder TDC" (mark 5) using the toothed belt drive gear fastening bolt. At the same time, notches (4) on the camshaft pulley and rear toothed belt cover must align. Turn crankshaft slowly and uniformly.

Attach pressure loss tester to compressed air system and calibrate. Screw connector in ignition plug bore of the 1st cylinder. Connect pressure loss tester with connection hose (1) (note manufacturer's instructions).

Caution

The crankshaft is not permitted to rotate during the test procedure. In order to avoid this, engage 1st gear or selector lever position "P" and apply parking brake.

  Inspect

Airflow to: Intake or exhaust side, coolant compensation tank and crankcase.

The max. pressure loss for one cylinder must not exceed 25%

Check pressure loss for 3rd, 4th and 2nd cylinders by analogy. Position piston of cylinder being checked in "TDC" position, ignition sequence: 1-3-4-2. Determine "TDC" position by marking camshaft pulley with positioning marks. Turn crankshaft a further 180° in engine rotational direction (corresponds to 90° on camshaft pulley) until camshaft pulley guide marks and mark on toothed belt cover align. Determine "TDC" position for 4th and 2nd cylinders by analogy. Turn crankshaft slowly and uniformly.

  Install

Install front toothed belt cover – see operation "Front Toothed Belt Cover, Remove and Install".
