Gearshift Lever, Disassemble and Assemble
Remove
Remove gearshift lever – see operation "Gearshift Lever,
Remove and Install".
Prise out both bushes for pins of outer shift rod. Remove foam
ring (1).

Remove gearshift lever from retaining ring. If necessary, use
plastic hammer. Remove retaining ring from gearshift lever
housing.

|
Drive lower spiral pin with suitable drift out of shift finger
tube.
|
|
Remove shift finger from gearshift lever. If necessary, apply
suitable open-jawed spanner to underside of shift finger and remove
shift finger.
Caution
Possibly difficult to move, avoid damage.

Remove
Drive upper spiral pin out with suitable drift and remove stop
sleeve.
|
|
Remove gearshift lever knob. To do so, saw diagonally into
gearshift lever knob and remove.
Saw off metal insert underneath as well and remove.
Caution
Do not damage gearshift lever pipe and reverse gear pawl.

Remove
Detach cable retainer from reverse gear pawl. To do so, lever
off cable retainer from lug in shift finger pipe using
screwdriver.
Remove actuation sleeve for reverse gear pawl upwards.

|
Remove retaining ring for gearshift lever pipe and pull off
gearshift lever pipe.
|
|
Remove following parts in this order: upper rubber grommet (1),
bushing (2), lock washer (3), lower rubber grommet (4), shift
finger pipe (5), cable retainer (6) with spring.
Remove spring from cable retainer (6).
Inspect
Check all parts for damage and wear, replace if necessary.
Caution
As of Model Year '96, an approx. 25 mm shorter gearshift lever
(8) is used. As a result, operation of the radio unit is improved
with respect to the previous gearshift lever (7).
All Omega-B models can be subsequently modified to accommodate
the shorter gearshift lever. Refer to the "Service Parts"
department for part numbers. Please note that the gearshift lever
cover and folding cover must also be modified.

Install
Push spring onto cable retainer.
Insert cable retainer (1) with spring into shift finger pipe
(5). Slide on lower rubber grommet (4).
Caution
Note installation position: open side of groove points
upwards.
Install
Install lock washer (3), bushing (2) and upper rubber
grommet.

Install gearshift lever pipe. Ensure that groove (1) of shift
finger pipe lies over lug (2) of gearshift lever tube.
Mount retaining ring.

|
Install actuation sleeve for reverse gear pawl (1).
Caution
Beforehand, place O-ring on gearshift lever pipe.
Push up cable retainer from below against spring tension and
attach cable retainer in lug of reverse gear pawl.

Install
Install stop sleeve. When doing this, ensure that upper, long
finger points towards the right, in driving direction. Drive in
long spiral pin until flush.

|
Install shift finger. Position shift finger (2) on gearshift
lever and drive firmly into position using a rubber mallet. Insert
short spiral pin (1).
Caution
Ensure that stop can be moved freely up and down.

Install
First push gearshift lever housing (1) over the ball end and lay
on the stop sleeve. Install support ring (2) on ball end of shift
finger. Rubber ring (arrow) points to gearshift lever knob.

|
Insert gearshift lever housing in support ring. Align gearshift
lever housing opposite stop sleeve as shown in illustration.
|
|
Install new bushings (arrows) for pin of outer shift rod in
shift finger.
|
|
First install folding cover (1) at gearshift lever pipe (2). To
do this, coat sleeve, reverse gear pawl with soap solution and pull
folding cover over reverse gear pawl.

If new gearshift lever knob with shift diagram is supplied:
Remove
Lever out shift diagram.
Heat metal insert of shift lever knob to approx. 70 °C using
industrial hot air dryer ensuring that cover is not damaged. Place
suitable installation device on inner surface of shift knob and
drive on with a plastic hammer.

Install
Inset in illustration – press shift diagram into socket on
gearshift lever knob – note correct position of shift
diagram.
Install gearshift lever – see operation "Gearshift Lever,
Remove and Install".
