Special tools and equipment
^
Feeler gauge

Wood or plastic wedge
Note:

Replace faulty lifter assembly (cannot be adjusted or repaired).
^
Irregular valve noises are normal when starting the engine.
Test sequence
-
Start engine and run until engine oil temperature is 80°C minimum
-
Increase engine speed to 2500 rpm for approximately 2 minutes.
-
If lifters are still noisy, locate faulty lifter(s) as follows:
-
Remove valve cover.
-
Rotate crankshaft clockwise, until cam of lifter to be checked is pointing upward.
-
Measure play between cam and lifter.
-
If play is in excess of 0.1 mm
-
Replace hydraulic lifter assembly
-
If play is less than 0.1 mm or no play
-
Proceed with check as follows
-
Press down on lifter with a wooden or plastic wedge.
-
If 1 mm or more of travel is felt before the lifter touches the valve:
-
Replace hydraulic lifter assembly
Note: Do NOT start the engine for approximately 30 minutes after new lifters have been installed. Hydraulic compensation elements must settle
or the valves will strike the pistons.
