Engine Control Module: Component Tests and General Diagnostics

Acceleration/Full Throttle Enrichment & Decel Fuel Cutoff

1.

Ensure battery voltage is correct, all ground connections are satisfactory and air conditioning is off.

2.

On Corrado models, fuses 16, 18 and 21 and on all other models, fuses 3, 5 and 18 are OK.

3.

Connect scan tool tester No. VAG 1551 or equivalent, as follows:

a. Remove shifter tunnel cover, then connect black connector to black test connector.
b. Connect white connector to white test connector.
c. Blue connector is not used.

4.

Start engine and allow to idle.

5.

Select ``Read measuring value block,'' then select the following in order:

a. 1-``Rapid data transfer.''
b. 01-``Engine electronics.''
c. 08-``Read measuring value block''
d. Press Q key to enter input.
e. Continue only after the digit in channel 3 is less than 11. (Corresponding to coolant temperature greater than 176°F).

6.

Allow engine to idle for two more minutes.

7.

Check channel 1, while revving engine over 3,000 RPM, three times.

8.

Let engine idle for two minutes.

9.

Note display value on channel 4 and briefly raise engine speed to 3,000 RPM.

10.

Value displayed on channel 4 must increase, then drop to 0 ms, then return to the value it was before revving engine.

11.

If value is same, acceleration/full throttle enrichment and deceleration fuel shutoff is OK.

12.

If display value does not increase and does not return to 0 ms check throttle potentiometer. 

Control Unit Emergency Running Function

1.

Ensure frequency valve is operating properly. Connect engine (dwell) tester tool No. VW 1367 or equivalent (connector 1, blue/white wire) using
adapter tool No. VW 1367/5 or equivalent, then depress ``%'' button.

2.

Connect remote control tool No. VW 1348/3A or equivalent, to disconnected electrical connector of control pressure regulator and battery positive
(+).

3.

Disconnect electrical connectors from thermo-switch, activate remote control and check duty cycle. Correct reading is 48--52%.

4.

If duty cycle value is not obtained, replace control unit.
