Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Testing and Inspection

1.

Ensure battery voltage is correct, all ground connections are satisfactory and air conditioning is off.

On Corrado models, fuses 16, 18 and 21 and on all other models, fuses 3, 5 and 18 are properly operating.

Connect scan tool tester No. VAG 1551 or equivalent, as follows:

a. Remove shifter tunnel cover, then connect black connector to black test connector.
b. Connect white connector to white test connector.
c. Blue connector is not used.

4.

Start engine and allow to idle.

5.

Select ``Read measuring value block,'' then select the following in order:

a. 1-``Rapid data transfer.''
b. 01-``Engine electronics.''
c. 08-``Read measuring value block.''

6.

Press keys 0 and 1 to select ``Display group No. 01.''

7.

Press Q key and observe value on channel 3.

If value increases uniformly without interruption, coolant temperature sensor and control is OK.

9.

If display value reads -40°C, there is a break in the wiring, sensor wiring, or wiring to control unit. Perform the following test:

a. Disconnect coolant temperature sensor harness connector, then bridge connector terminals using jumpers from Part VW 1594 adapter kit.
b. Displayed value must be 80°C minimum. If it is, coolant temperature sensor is OK.
c. Turn ignition off, then replace coolant temperature sensor.
d. Activate and clear trouble code memory.

If display value reads a minimum of 80°C, there is a short circuit to negative between coolant temperature sensor, wiring or control unit. Perform
the following test:

a. With ignition off, disconnect coolant temperature sensor harness connector.
b. Using appropriate ohmmeter, check sensor terminals of sensor using jumpers from Part VW 1594 adapter kit.
c. Ohmmeter readout should be within Fig. 11, if it is, connect coolant sensor and check wiring for short circuit to control.
d. If wiring is OK, replace Digifant control unit. Activate and clear trouble code memory, then return control to basic setting, following scan

tool instructions.

e. If ohmmeter reading is out of range, replace coolant temperature sensor.
