Compression Check: Testing and Inspection

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
‹› Spark Plug Removal Tool (3122B)
‹› Ignition Coil Puller (T40039)
‹› Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
‹› Compression Tester (V.A.G 1763)
‹› Adapter (V.A.G 1381/5A)
Conditions
‹› Engine oil temperature must be at least 30 °C (86 °F).
‹› Voltage supply OK.

Remove the engine cover/upper air filter housing. Refer to => [ Engine Cover/Upper Air Filter Housing ] See: Tune-up and Engine Performance
Checks/Air Cleaner Housing/Service and Repair/Engine Cover/Upper Air Filter Housing.

Remove the ignition coils with power output stage. Refer to => [ Ignition Coils with Power Output Stages ] See: Powertrain Management/Ignition
System/Ignition Coil/Service and Repair.

Remove the spark plugs using (3122 B).

Check the compression using (V.A.G 1763) and (V.A.G 1381/5A).
‹› Using (V.A.G 1763), refer to the operating instructions.

Have a second technician crank the starter.

Crank the starter until the (V.A.G 1763) shows no further pressure increase.

To conclude work, check the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory of the Engine Control Module (ECM), erase all DTC entries which may
have occurred during the tests and repairs.
‹› If the DTC memory was erased, generate a readiness code, refer to "Guided Function" in the vehicle diagnostic tester.
