Starter Motor: Description and Operation

Starter

Application and Safety Notes:

CAUTION!
If assembly work is performed on starter, note the following:

‹› Switch off ignition, switch off all electrical consumers and remove ignition key.

‹› Disconnect battery, refer to => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment ] See: Battery/Service and

Repair/Removal and Replacement/Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment or => [ Disconnecting and
Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment ] See: Battery/Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Disconnecting and
Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment.

When disconnecting and connecting battery, the procedure must be followed as described in the Repair Information => [ Disconnecting
and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment ] See: Battery/Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Disconnecting and
Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment or => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment ] See:
Battery/Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment.

DTC Recognition and Display:

For fault-finding, use the Vehicle Diagnosis, Measurement And Information System (VAS 5051A), and the function " Guided fault finding" => [
Starter, Checking ] See: Testing and Inspection/Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview.

‹› Starter B, checking, refer to => [ Starter, Checking ] See: Testing and Inspection/Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview. 

‹› Vehicles with a 2.0l TSI engine, manual transmission, refer to => [ Starter ] See: Service and Repair/Starter.

‹› Tightening torques: starter, refer to => [ Starter Tightening Specifications ] See: Specifications.
