Fuel Gauge: Testing and Inspection
Checking Fuel Gauge

NOTE:

-

If the coolant temperature gauge is also defective, the instrument cluster must be replaced.

-

If there is a short circuit or break in the wiring of the Fuel Level Sensor (G), the pointer of the gauge remains at the "Empty" line of the scale.

-

The fuel gauge display does not change until more than 4 liters of fuel are added to the tank. Smaller quantities do not cause the display to change.

-

The ignition must be switched off during refueling, as otherwise the tank content will not be properly displayed for a considerable time after
refueling.

-

If the tank was filled completely with the ignition switched on, the "Full" line of the scale will not be reached for a considerable time. The fuel
gauge can be corrected by disconnected and then reconnecting the battery (terminal 30). The display can also be corrected by calling up the 
instrument cluster test mode.

For troubleshooting is required:

-

Use ammeter and/or digital multimeter Fluke 83 (US 1719) for all electrical checks.

-

Connector test kit WV 1594

-

Valid wiring diagram

-

Display instrument tester WV 1301

-

Use connector test box V.A.G 1598 with test adapter V.A.G 1598/8

Check battery ground strap connections for tight seating before troubleshooting.

Preparations for troubleshooting:

-

Pull trim off handbrake.

-

Carefully cut apart floor covering at perforation Make sure not to damage wiring below it.

-

Unscrew cover on floor plate.

-

Pull connector oft fuel level sensor -G-.

-

Connect display instrument tester VW 1301 with auxiliary test kit V.A.G 1594 using wiring diagram.

Checking fuel gauge

Test Conditions:

-

Fuses OK, See wiring diagram.
