4 cyl. carburetor engine, mechanics (1.5, 1.6 and 1.8 litre engine)
Servicing throttle controls - automatic gearbox
Adjusting throttle controls - automatic gearbox

(Vehicles with 2E2 carburettor)

The throttle controls are to be set such that the throttle valve at the carburettor are in overrun position and the operating lever on the gearbox is at the stop (overrun position). Otherwise switching up a gear will take place too late in the medium speed range.

As the throttle valves on the 2E2 carburettor (with automatic start function) are only in the overrun position with engine running and at operating temperature, adjustment is to be carried out as follows.

Adjusting throttle cable and accelerator pedal cable

  • ‒ Unscrew cover plate with return spring at gearbox.

V37-0535
  • ‒ → Loosen knurled nut of accelerator pedal cable -arrow-.
  • ‒ Remove air cleaner.
  • ‒ Loosen nuts for throttle cable at bracket/carburettor.

U20-0061
  • ‒ → Turn warm-up lever -A- such that pin -B- of throttle actuator does not make contact and secure lever -A- in this position. To do so, secure lever -C- with screwdriver (marked on illustration with -D-).
  • ‒ Detach vacuum hoses from three-point unit.

U20-0062
  • ‒ → Connect up vacuum pump to connection -A- (lowest connection) of three-point unit.
  • ‒ Seal vacuum connection -B- of three-point unit.
  • ‒ Use vacuum pump to generate vacuum until diaphragm rod is held constant in overrun position and there is an air gap between the adjusting screw for the cold idle speed and the diaphragm rod.

U20-0063
  • ‒ → Pull sleeve for throttle cable in direction of arrow until there is no longer any play. The throttle valve must remain closed and the operating lever/gearbox must be on stop (overrun position).
  • ‒ Turn nut -1- with no stress against bracket and lock nut -2- to 10 Nm.
  • ‒ Depress accelerator pedal as far as the stop (kickdown); second mechanic required.

V37-0540
  • ‒ → Turn knurled nut -C- until operating lever/gearbox makes contact with stop -arrow- (kickdown) and lock with nut.
  • ‒ Secure cover plate with return spring to gearbox.

Checking setting

  • ◆ Throttle lever in overrun position.
Operating lever/gearbox must be on stop (overrun position).
  • ‒ Depress accelerator pedal as far as full-throttle pressure point (no kickdown). Throttle lever must make contact with full-throttle stop and kickdown spring must not be deflected.

U20-0064
  • ‒ → Depress accelerator pedal beyond full-throttle pressure point as far as stop (kickdown). Operating lever/gearbox must make contact with stop (kickdown) and kickdown spring must be deflected a = approx. 8 mm.
