Notes for repair work on anti-lock brake system (ABS)
Before working on ABS system, ignition must be switched off and battery earth strap disconnected. Pressure in the accumulator (high pressure) must also be dissipated under all circumstances. Actuate brake pedal (approx. 20 times) until clearly perceptible increase in pedal force occurs.
The ABS system is maintenance-free, but the following must be noted when working on vehicles with ABS:
t  Before carrying out welding work with an electric welding unit → Special information; Body No. 19.
t  When working with brake fluid, observe the relevant safety precautions and notes → Chapter.
t  After work for which the brake system had to be opened, bleed brake system with brake filling and bleeding equipment -VW 1238/1- or -V.A.G 1238 B- → Chapter.
t  During a concluding road test, ensure that a regulated brake test takes place at least once (pulsations must be felt at the brake pedal).
t  Absolute cleanliness is required when working on the anti-lock brake system. It is not permitted to use any products which contain mineral oil, such as oils, greases etc.
t  Thoroughly clean all connections and the adjacent areas before loosening; do not use aggressive cleaning agents such as, e.g. brake cleaner, petrol, thinners or similar.
t  Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover them up.
t  Only use lint-free cloths.
t  If repairs cannot be carried out immediately, carefully cover or seal open components.
t  Only unpack replacement parts immediately prior to fitting.
t  Only use genuine packaged parts.
t  When the system is open do not work with compressed air and do not move the vehicle.
t  Ensure that no brake fluid enters electrical connections.
