Checking steering rack for scoring
Checking steering rack for scoring

The steering rack must be renewed if it has corroded areas or visible deep scoring.
With this visual check it is not possible to assess whether the steering rack has been damaged by force e.g. caused by an accident.
If light scoring -arrows- is visible/perceptible on the steering rack, and this is only so deep that it can be rubbed-out with abrasive paper (graining 350..600), the steering rack can be reused.
  N48-0044
–  Rub down steering rack with abrasive paper in a radial direction. (This is only possible with light scoring).
–  Check chamfer on face side of steering rack for damage, if necessary eliminate with a fine whetstone and/or abrasive paper.
