Removing and installing brake pads > < Brake pads with specified direction of rotation

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1410-
   
t  Brake pedal depressor -V.A.G 1869/2-
  Note
t  After changing brake pads, firmly depress brake pedal several times with vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
t  After work for which the brake system had to be opened, bleed the brake system with brake filling and bleeding unit -VAS 5234- or extraction unit -V.A.G 1869/4-.
t  Fit brake pedal depressor -V.A.G 1869/2- before removing a brake caliper or disconnecting a brake hose.
t  Wheel bolt torque settings → Running gear, axles, steering - front and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.44

1 - Cross-head screw, 4 Nm
2 - Brake disc
q   Internally ventilated brake disc: Ø 334 mm
q   Brake disc thickness: 32 mm
q   Wear limit: 30 mm
q   Always renew both sides
q   Left differs to right. Arrow points in direction of normal travel
q   Remove brake caliper prior to removing
3 - Brake pads
q   With wear indicator
q   When wear reaches a predetermined limit (approx 4 mm) the warning lamp in dash panel insert comes on
q   Thickness 14 mm not including backplate
q   Checking thickness → Booklet37
q   Always renew both sides
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Wear limit: 2 mm including backplate
4 - Retaining spring
q   Press under brake carrier and insert into both holes in brake caliper housing
If incorrectly installed, the wear of the outer pad cannot be adjusted, and the pedal travel will be increased as a result
5 - Brake carrier
q   Bolt to wheel bearing housing
6 - Brake caliper
q   Do not disconnect brake hose when changing brake pads
q   Removing:
q   Remove brake pads → Chapter
q   Fit brake pedal depressor -V.A.G 1869/2-
q   Unscrew brake hose → Item from brake caliper
q   Installing:
q   Install brake pads → Chapter
q   Connect brake hose → Item to brake caliper
q   Remove brake pedal depressor -V.A.G 1869/2-
q   Bleed brake system → Chapter.
q   Repairing → Chapter
7 - Bearing bush
8 - Guide pin, 25 Nm
9 - Cap
q   Take off
q   Upper protective cap with cable holder for brake pad wear indicator
10 - Bracket
q   Bolt to brake caliper housing
11 - Hexagon bolt, 8 Nm
12 - Brake hose and line, 15 Nm
q   Screw into brake caliper.
q   Do not disconnect brake hose when changing brake pads
13 - Self-locking combi-bolt, 125 Nm
q   Clean if reusing
14 - Wheel bearing housing
15 - Allen bolt, 8 Nm
16 - ABS speed sensor
q   Before inserting sensor, clean inner surface of fitting hole and coat with lubricating paste G 000 650
17 - Cover plate
18 - Hexagon bolt, 10 Nm
19 - Wheel hub with rotor
20 - Connector
21 - Bracket
22 - Bolt
