Repairing rear brakes
Repairing rear brakes
After working on the rear wheel brakes:
t  Release handbrake.
t  Bleed brake system → Chapter.
t  Firmly depress brake pedal once.
   
1 - Spring plate
q   To remove, push against the spring and turn through 90°
2 - Spring
3 - Brake shoe with lever for handbrake
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Adjust handbrake → Chapter
4 - Upper return spring
q   Unhook with special tool 3438
5 - Lower return spring
q   Grease contact surfaces with lubricant paste, part No. G 000 650
6 - Spring
7 - Brake shoe
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Minimum lining thickness 2.5 mm
q   Checking thickness → Booklet37
Brake linings can also be supplied without the metal brake shoe
8 - Cap
q   Remove to check brake lining thickness
9 - Shoe steady pin
10 - Brake carrier
11 - Allen bolt, 8 Nm
12 - Wheel cylinder
q   Check for leaks → Fig.
q   Bleed valve, 5 Nm
13 - Wedge
q   To remove and install the brake drum, push upwards through a wheel bolt hole → Chapter
14 - Push rod
q   Grease contact surfaces with lubricant paste, part No. G 000 650
15 - Locating spring
q   Unhook with special tool 3438

   
Checking wheel cylinder for leaks
–  Lift dust boot.
–  If brake fluid is found in the dust boot, renew wheel cylinder.
Care is to be exercised to ensure the dust boot is not damaged when lifting.
