Notes on installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When installing, note the following:
  WARNING
When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to the cramped conditions:
t  Route all the various lines (e.g. for fuel, hydraulics, activated charcoal filter system, coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum) and electrical wiring in their original positions.
t  Ensure that there is sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.
–  Insert new dowel sleeves in cylinder block for centring engine and gearbox.
   
–  Hook intermediate plate onto sealing flange and slide onto dowel sleeves -arrows-.
Vehicles with manual gearbox
–  Lightly grease input shaft splines with grease -G 000 100-.
–  Check clutch and clutch operating mechanism and install → Rep. Gr.30.
–  Install gear selector mechanism: → Rep. Gr.34.
–  Adjust selector mechanism, if necessary: → Rep. Gr.34.
Vehicles with automatic gearbox
–  Install gate lever cable on gearbox, adjust if necessary: → Rep. Gr.37.
Continuation for all vehicles
–  When installing engine and gearbox assembly, ensure sufficient clearance to subframe and radiator.
–  Align engine and gearbox mountings → Chapter.
Torque settings → Chapter.
–  Install right drive shaft and connect left drive shaft to gearbox: → Rep. Gr.40.
–  Install front exhaust pipe → Chapter.
Vehicles with no EPC system (AEH, AKL)
–  Adjusting throttle cable → Chapter.
–  Adapt Motronic control unit -J220- to throttle valve control module -J338-: → Rep. Gr.24.
Vehicles with EPC system (APF)
–  Perform work procedure “Erase learnt values and adapt engine control unit to throttle valve control module and to exhaust gas recirculation valve” → Rep. Gr.24.
Continuation for all vehicles
–  Install power assisted steering vane pump: → Rep. Gr.48.
–  Electrical connections and routing → Rep. Gr.97.
–  On vehicles with an automatic gearbox the gearbox control unit must be matched additionally: → Rep. Gr.01.
–  Install poly-V-belt → Chapter.
–  If necessary, install secondary air pump.
–  Install centre, left and right insulation trays: → Rep. Gr.50.
–  Fill with coolant → Chapter.
