  Note
t  Before beginning repair work, perform the following steps → Chapter.
t  Parts marked with an “*” can be repaired only in workshops with suitable equipment and specially trained mechanics because the refrigerant must be evacuated beforehand using, for example, the air conditioning service station -VAS 6007A-.
1 - Side window vent
q   Removing → Chapter.
2 - Vent
q   Removing → Chapter.
3 - Defroster vent
q   Removing and installing → Rep. Gr.70.
4 - Sunlight penetration photosensor -G107-
q   Tasks: controls temperature flap and fresh air blower depending on light intensity.
q   In event of failure: control unit -J255- assumes fixed value.
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Removing and installing
5 - Dash panel temperature sensor -G56- with temperature sensor blower -V42-
q   The Climatronic control unit -J255-, the operating and display unit for Climatronic air conditioning system -E87- and the dash panel temperature sensor -G56- with temperature sensor blower -V42- are combined in one unit which cannot be dismantled.
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Task: the temperature sensor controls the temperature flap and the fresh air blower based on the temperature.
q   In event of failure of dash panel temperature sensor -G56-: continued operation assuming value of +24° C.
q   Renewing and adjusting → Chapter
6 - Operating and display unit for Climatronic air conditioning system -E87- with Climatronic control unit -J255-
q   The Climatronic control unit -J255-, the operating and display unit for Climatronic air conditioning system -E87- and the dash panel temperature sensor -G56- with temperature sensor blower -V42- are combined in one unit which cannot be dismantled.
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Operation and function → Chapter.
q   Renewing and adjusting → Chapter
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
7 - Intermediate piece
8 - Dash panel cross member
q   Detaching and attaching → Chapter.
9 - Dust and pollen filter
q   With activated charcoal filter.
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
10 - Fresh air intake duct temperature sensor -G89-
q   With seal.
q   Function: temperature sensor controls temperature flap and fresh air blower, depending on temperature.
q   In event of failure: ambient temperature sensor -G17- takes over the function.
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
Renewing:
q   Remove glove box. → Rep. Gr.68
q   Turn temperature sensor 90° and pull out.
q   When installing, moisten rubber seal with oil.
  Note
If removal and installation are not possible as described above, continue as follows:
For vehicles with a double pedal or reinforced insulation
q   Removing and installing dash panel → Rep. Gr.70.
q   Loosen dash panel cross member → Item.
  Note
Observe the installation notes when carrying out repair work → Anchor.
11 - Evaporator output temperature sender -G263-
Only on vehicles with externally regulated compressor ► week 19.00
Installed in all vehicles starting week 20 of 2000
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   With seal.
Renewing:
q   Remove glove box. → Rep. Gr.68
q   Turn temperature sensor 90° and pull out.
q   When installing, moisten rubber seal with oil.
  Note
If removal and installation are not possible as described above, continue as follows:
For vehicles with a double pedal or reinforced insulation.
–  Removing and installing dash panel → Rep. Gr.70.
–  Loosen dash panel cross member → Item.
  Note
Observe the installation notes when carrying out repair work → Anchor.
12 - Air flow flap control motor -V71-
q   Operates simultaneously fresh air and air recirculation flap.
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Removing → Chapter.
q   Renewing and adjusting → Chapter
13 - Fresh air blower -V2-
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Removing → Chapter.
14 - Fresh air blower control unit -J126-
q   Task: continuously variable control of fresh air blower speed depending on voltage.
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Renewing → Chapter.
15 - Distribution box and evaporator housing*
q   With heat exchanger.
q   With evaporator.
q   Removing:
q   Remove dash panel → Rep. Gr.70.
q   Extract refrigerant, e.g. with air conditioning service station -VAS 6007A-.
q   Dismantling and assembling → Chapter.
16 - Central flap control motor -V70-
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Removing → Chapter.
q   Renewing and adjusting → Chapter
17 - Temperature flap control motor -V68-
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Removing → Chapter.
q   Renewing and adjusting → Chapter
18 - Centre trim
19 - Climatronic control unit -J255-
q   The Climatronic control unit -J255-, the operating and display unit for Climatronic air conditioning system -E87- and the dash panel temperature sensor -G56- with temperature sensor blower -V42- are combined in one unit which cannot be dismantled.
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Renewing and adjusting → Chapter
20 - Footwell vent
q   Passenger side only.
21 - Rear duct
22 - Seal
23 - Connecting piece
q   With driver side footwell vent.
q   Removing → Chapter.
24 - Footwell vent temperature sender -G192-
q   Function: controls air distribution between defroster and footwell and the fresh air blower speed dependent upon the vent temperature.
q   Emergency running in event of failure: continued operation assuming water temperature of +80° C.
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
25 - Footwell and defroster flap control motor -V85-
q   Checking: vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- in guided fault finding.
q   Removing → Chapter.
q   Renewing and adjusting → Chapter
26 - Heat exchanger*
q   After removal, completely renew coolant.
q   Removing:
q   Remove dash panel → Rep. Gr.70.
q   Extract refrigerant, e.g. with air conditioning service station -VAS 6007A-.
q   Remove distribution box and evaporator housing.
27 - Heat exchanger/bulkhead seal*
q   Note installation position → Chapter.
28 - Intermediate piece, defrost
Renewing:
q   Removing and installing dash panel → Rep. Gr.70.
q   Remove dash panel cross member → Chapter
q   Note installation position → Chapter.
