Additional required information
t  Workshop Manual Golf 1998 ►, Bora 1999 ►, Running gear, axles, steering - front and four-wheel drive
–  Observe general repair instructions → Chapter.
Removing
–  Remove centre and left parts of noise insulation below engine and gearbox, if fitted.
–  Unbolt drive shaft from flange shaft.
–  Raise drive shaft as high as possible and secure. Take care not to damage paint on drive shaft in the process.
–  Remove flange shaft securing bolt by screwing two bolts into flange and counterholding flange shaft with a lever.
–  Place drip tray under gearbox.
–  Pull out flange shaft with compression spring.

–  Pull out flange shaft oil seal using multi-purpose tool -VW 771- and puller hooks -VW 771/37-.
Installing
  V39-1961
–  Drive in new seal to stop, being careful not to cant seal.
–  Half-fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with sealing grease for radial oil seal -G 052 128 A1-.
–  Insert flange shaft.
–  Secure flange shaft using countersunk bolt and tighten to specified torque → Item.
–  Bolt left drive shaft to flange shaft → Running gear, axles, steering - front and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.
–  Checking gear oil in manual gearbox with bevel box → Chapter.
–  Install noise insulation, if fitted.
