Removing and installing parts of lubrication system
  Note
t  Finding metal shavings or a large quantity of small metal particles during engine repair could indicate that the crankshaft bearings or conrod bearings are damaged. To prevent subsequent damage, perform the following work after completing repairs:
t  Thoroughly clean oil channels.
t  Renew oil spray jets.
t  Renew oil cooler.
t  Renew oil filter.
t  The oil level must not be above the max. mark - danger of damage to catalytic converter! Markings → Fig..

t  Without oil filter 3.5 l.
t  With oil filter 4.0 l.
If necessary, fill to max. mark

Engine oil specifications with long-life service
Use engine oils conforming to VW standard 503 00.
  Note
t  The engine is filled at the factory with engine oil conforming to VW standard 503 00. This engine oil is designed for long service intervals.
t  Engine oils conforming to VW standard 500 00, 501 01 or 502 00 can continued to be used. These oils must be changed every 12 months or 15,000 kilometres. The service interval display must be programmed accordingly. Procedure: → Booklet37
