Engine control unit
Interrogating and erasing engine control unit fault memory

When the fault memory is erased the engine control unit loses some learnt values. Therefore it can lead to engine running malfunctions, depending upon the vehicle mileage.

In this case:

  • ‒ Perform a longer road test until the poor driving characteristics are eliminated.

Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required

  • ◆ VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System
  • ◆ Diagnostic cable VAS 5051/1 or VAS 5051/3

Work sequence

  • ‒ Connect Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 as follows:
  • ‒ → Fit connector of diagnosis cable VAS 5051/1 or VAS 5051/3 to diagnosis connection -arrow-.
  • ‒ Start engine and run at idling speed.

Only when engine does not start:

  • ‒ Switch on ignition.

Select operating mode:

  • ‒ Press button on screen for "Vehicle self-diagnosis".

Select vehicle system:

  • ‒ Press button "01 - Engine electronics" on screen.

The control unit identification and engine control unit coding are shown on the screen.

Note:

A print-out can be produced if required. Press the "Print" button.

Select diagnostic function:

  • ‒ Press button "02 - Interrogating fault memory" on screen.
  • ‒ "No fault detected" appears on screen if no faults are stored in the engine control unit.
  • ‒ If faults are stored in the engine control unit they will appear on the screen listed one below the other.
  • ‒ Press the button ←.
  • ‒ Press button "05 - Erase fault memory" on screen.
  • ‒ Press function 06-"End output".
  • ‒ After erasing the fault memory, the readiness code must be generated in the "Guided fault finding" , Adapting components and functions.
