Pressing out and pressing in front wheel bearing

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Thrust plate -40 - 105-

t	Remover -3283-

t	Grip tool -3423-

t	Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- with universal gearbox support -V.A.G 1359/2-

t	-2-Puller -Kukko 18/0-.

t  Ball joint puller -3287 A-

t  Foot pump with high-pressure hose -V.A.G 1389 A/1- If a hand pump -V.A.G 1389/1- is available in the workshop, it can be converted for use as a foot pump. To do this, use the conversion set -V.A.G 1389/4-.

t  Hydraulic wheel bearing tool -V.A.G 1459 B- t  Hollow piston cylinder -HKZ-15- with hydraulic thrust piece -E-0-204-T- t  Pull rod -E-0-217+218- t  Special nut -E-8-214- t  Thrust piece -E-5- t  Thrust piece -E-10- t  Thrust sleeve -E-13-1- t  Thrust bolt -E-15-

t  Supplementary set -V.A.G 1459 B/2- t  Bell -E-40- –  Lift vehicle far enough to take weight off front wheels. –  Loosen hexagon bolt. –  Lift vehicle to work height. –  Remove wheel.

–  Unscrew upper coupling rod hexagon nuts from left and right suspension strut. –  Pull clip out from brake hose retainer and unhook brake hose. –  Unhook speed sensor cable from suspension strut. –  Remove brake carrier with brake caliper and suspend from body using wire → Brake systems; Rep. Gr.46. –  Unscrew nuts from swivel joint.

–  Install ball joint splitter as shown in figure and press out swivel joint.   Note Leave nut screwed on a few turns to protect thread on swivel joint.

–  Press out drive shaft.   Note When pressing drive shaft out, ensure that there is sufficient clearance. –  Remove drive shaft from wheel bearing housing and tie up. The drive shaft must not hang down! The inner joint will otherwise be damaged through overflexing. –  Remove cross-head screw for brake disc and remove brake disc. –  Remove splash plate.   Note Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383/A- under vehicle (risk of parts falling when wheel hub and bearing are pulled out).
