Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
  W00-0427
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
Removing
–  Unclip engine cover from engine.
  Note
When the battery is removed and installed, the procedure described in the workshop manual should be strictly adhered to → Chapter.
–  Remove battery → Chapter.
–  Remove bolts securing battery carrier -arrows-.

–  Remove battery carrier.
  N97-0137
–  Separate connector -1- and pull connector out of holder.
–  Disconnect terminal 50 connection -2-.
–  Unscrew terminal 30 wire -3- from solenoid switch.
–  Remove wiring from cable guide.
–  Remove cable guide.

–  Remove securing screws -arrows- and remove centre engine compartment cover.

–  Unscrew hexagon nut and unclip securing clips -arrows-.
–  Remove left engine compartment cover.
–  Unscrew holder for power steering pressure hose and place to one side.

–  Remove hexagon bolts -1- and -2-.
–  Remove starter downwards from the vehicle.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal. When doing so, note the following:
  WARNING
To disconnect and reconnect the battery, the procedure described in the workshop manual should be strictly adhered to → Chapter
–  Reconnect battery.
Tighten threaded connections to specified torques → Chapter.
