Removing –  Disconnect vehicle battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27. –  Remove dash panel → Chapter. Golf 2009 ► –  Remove knee airbag bracket (Golf 2009 ►) RHD models → Chapter All vehicles –  Remove wiper arms → Electrical system; Rep. gr.92. –  Remove plenum chamber cover → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.

–  Unscrew bolt -1- in plenum chamber (20 Nm).

–	Press out the two spreader pins -3- upwards.

–	Pull out both spreader rivets -2-.

–	Remove intermediate pieces -1- and -4- from heater and air conditioning unit.

Note When removing cross member, note position of electrical wires and their attachment; produce sketches or take photos if necessary!

–  Disconnect wiring harness -1- from immobiliser reader coil -D2-. –  Disconnect steering column from cross member → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.48.

–  Release wiring harnesses from cross member -arrows-.

–  Separate wiring retainer -1- from cross member on both sides of vehicle -arrow-.

–  Unscrew two bolts each on left and right -1- and -2- (20 Nm).

–	Remove bolts -1- and -2- (4.5 Nm).

–	Unscrew the two nuts -3- and -4- (9 Nm).

–	Remove bolts -5- and -6- (4.5 Nm).

–	Unscrew the two nuts -7- and -8- (8 Nm).

Note In area of nuts -1- and -2-, use a scriber to mark vertical and horizontal position of cross member in vehicle.

–  Unscrew the two nuts -1- and -2- on driver side (20 Nm).   Note In area of nut -2-, use a scriber to mark vertical and horizontal position of cross member in vehicle.

–  Unscrew nut -2- on front passenger side (20 Nm). –  Release wiring harness fasteners, depending on vehicle equipment level, from cross member. –  Pull cross member -1- about 2 cm to the rear.

–  Remove bolts -1- and -2- (9 Nm). –  Remove support plate -3- from cross member -4-.   Note When removing cross member, note position of electrical wires and their attachment; produce sketches or take photos if necessary! –  With aid of second mechanic, carefully lift cross member -4- out of vehicle.
