Removing propshaft –  Remove noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50. –  Remove entire exhaust system → Rep. gr.26.

–  Support propshaft with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- using a block of wood -A-, for example, to do so. –  Then unbolt heat shield -arrows- and the attached intermediate bearing of propshaft.

–  After removing heat shield, bolt on intermediate bearing -arrows- again for further removal of propshaft.

To prevent later noise due to imbalance: –  Mark position of propshaft to flange on output flange/bevel box.

–  Unbolt propshaft with flexible coupling from output flange of bevel box.

–  Unscrew bolts 1…3 and remove pendulum support.   Note When swinging tube out, ensure that front propshaft tube is flexed as little as possible downwards. –  Carefully pull off front propshaft from centring pin on bevel box.   Note

t  Seal -arrow- in flange of propshaft must not be damaged. t  Pull propshaft horizontally off centring pin. –  Swing down front propshaft tube.

–  Check if there are coloured marks on flexible coupling and on propshaft flange of rear final drive -arrows-. If there is no marking present, mark positions of flexible coupling and propshaft flange of rear final drive relative to each other -arrows-.

–  Unbolt rear propshaft with flexible coupling and vibration damper from rear final drive -arrows-.   Note A second mechanic is required for the further removal of the propshaft.   WARNING To avoid damaging the protective boot in the centre bearing, remove, store and install the propshaft with the joint as straight as possible.

–  Unbolt intermediate bearing -arrows- and remove propshaft to rear, keeping the joint as straight as possible.   Note t  Do not cant propshaft during removal; instead pull horizontally off centring pin.

t  Seal in centring sleeve -arrow- must not be damaged. t  Flexible coupling and vibration damper cannot be separated from one another.
