Checking compression
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Spark plug socket and extension -3122 B-
t  Torque wrench (5…50 Nm) -V.A.G 1331-
t  Compression tester -V.A.G 1763-
t  Puller -T10094 A-

Test prerequisite
l  Engine oil temperature must be at least 30 °C.
Procedure
–  Remove air filter → Chapter.
–  Remove ignition coils. Use puller -T10094 A- for this purpose.
–  Remove spark plugs using spark plug socket 3122 B.
–  Remove fuse for fuel pump control unit -J538- from fuse holder. Fuse assignment → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
  Note
Removing fuse will interrupt the voltage supply for the fuel pump control unit -J538-.
–  Check compression using compression tester -V.A.G 1763-.
  Note
How to use the test unit is described in the respective operating instructions.
–  Operate starter until tester shows no further pressure increase.
Compression pressures:
New: 10…15 bar.
Wear limit: 7 bar.
Maximum permissible difference between all cylinders: 3 bar
–  Insert spark plugs with spark plug spanner 3122B and tighten to 30 Nm.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling sequence.
–  Read fault memory, repair faults if necessary and then erase fault memory → Vehicle diagnosis tester„Guided fault finding“.
The readiness code will have to be created once the fault memory has been deleted.
