Cylinder head > < Checking valve timing
Setting engine to »TDC« using dial gaugeVAS 6079
Setting engine to »TDC« using dial gauge -VAS 6079-
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Dial gauge -VAS 6079-
  W00-1261
t  Dial gauge adapter -T10170- or dial gauge adapter -T10170 A-
–  Remove timing chain cover (top) → Chapter.

–  Turn crankshaft from above in engine DOR using socket AF 24 on vibration damper until markings -arrows- are at top.
–  Remove spark plug from cylinder 1.

–  Screw dial gauge adapter -T10170/A- as far as it will go into spark plug hole.
–  Insert dial gauge -VAS 6079- with extension -T10170A/1- as far as it will go and secure in place with self-locking nut -arrow-.
–  Slowly turn crankshaft in engine DOR to maximum needle deflection. Once maximum needle deflection is reached (reverse point of needle), piston is at »TDC«.
  Note
If crankshaft is turned past »TDC«, then turn crankshaft back about 45° against engine direction of rotation. Then turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to »TDC«.
