Removing and installing lower part of sump Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- t  Hand drill with plastic brush t  Eye protection t  Silicone sealant -D 174 003 A2- Removing –  Remove noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50

–  If fitted, disconnect electrical connector -1- for oil level and oil temperature sender -G266-. –  Drain off engine oil.   Note Observe environmental regulations for disposal.

–  Unscrew bolts -1…20-. –  Take off sump: if necessary loosen it by striking lightly with a rubber hammer. Installing l  Specified torques → Chapter.   Note t  Note expiry date of silicone sealant. t  The sump must be installed within 5 minutes of applying silicone sealing compound. –  Remove sealant residue from sump (top section) using a flat scraper.   WARNING Risk of eye injury. Wear safety goggles.

–  Remove sealant residue from bottom part of sump, e.g. with rotating plastic brush. –  Clean sealing surfaces. They must be oil and grease free.

–  Cut off nozzle on tube at front marking (Ø of nozzle approx. 3 mm).

–  Apply the bead of silicone sealant -D 174 003 A2- to the clean sealing surface of the sump (bottom section), as illustrated.   Note t  The sump must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant. t  The bead of sealant must not be thicker than specified, otherwise excess sealant can enter the sump and obstruct the strainer in the oil intake pipe. t  Thickness of sealant bead: 2…3 mm.

–  Fit bottom part of sump straightaway and tighten bolts -1 to 20- in 3 stages as follows: 1 -  Tighten bolts hand tight. 2 -  Tighten bolts to 8 Nm. 3 -  Turn bolts 45° further   Note Let sealing compound dry for approx. 30 minutes after installing oil sump. Only then fill with engine oil. –  Replenish engine oil, oil capacities → Chapter. Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling sequence.
