Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Locating pins -T10096-
  W00-1128
t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-
Removing
–  Remove front left wheel.
–  Remove lower noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
–  Detach exhaust system bracket from subframe.
Vehicles with front-wheel drive
  W00-0120
–  Remove bolts -arrows- from heat shield.
–  Remove heat shield from subframe.
Continuation for all vehicles
  N48-10012
–  Disconnect pendulum support from gearbox by removing bolts -14-.
–  If present, detach coupling rod of front left vehicle level sender -G78- from suspension link.
–  Fix position of subframe → Chapter.
  N40-10020
–  Remove nuts -arrows-.
  N40-10005
–  Loosen bolt -17-.
–  Now unscrew bolts for:
t  steering box -3- and -6-
t  anti-roll bar -11- and -16-
.

–  Position engine and gearbox jack-V.A.G 1383 A- under subframe.
–  Place, for example, a wooden block -1- between engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- and subframe.
  N40-10028
–  Remove bolts -2-, -4-, -5- and -12- and lower subframe with brackets as far as necessary.
–  At the same time, lever dowel sleeves of steering box out of left bracket.
–  Remove bolt -17- and remove suspension link from bracket.
Installing
Install in reverse order.
  Note
t  Ensure proper seating of dowel sleeves for steering box in suspension bracket.
t  Ensure that bellows are not damaged or twisted.
–  Install lower noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
–  Install wheel and tighten bolts or nuts → Chapter.

t  Bolt M6 is self-locking

Steering box to subframe
t  Use new bolts
t  Always renew clamp on 1st and 2nd generation steering boxes

Exhaust system bracket to subframe

Specified torques for pendulum support to gearbox
  Caution
From model year 08, HeliCoil inserts are installed in the pendulum support connection in the 02Q gearboxes. Identification → Rep. gr.34.
Use a bolt with hardness class 10.9 for this and all other gearboxes.
If there is no HeliCoil insert in the 02Q gearbox, use bolts with the strength class 8.8 and the corresponding torque setting.
