Removing and installing battery, battery in luggage compartment
  WARNING
t  Battery isolator improves crash safety on vehicles with battery installed in luggage compartment. In an accident, the airbag control unit triggers a charge that separates the supply line to the starter and the engine electronics. Battery isolation is performed pyrotechnically, with a very small explosive charge. To ensure that the charge is not triggered accidentally when working on the battery or the battery isolator, it is essential that the battery is first disconnected → Chapter.
t  Observe safety measures when working on the battery isolator → Chapter.
t  Observe notes for disposal of battery isolation units → Chapter.
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
Removing:
–  Disconnect battery → Chapter.
  W00-0427
–  Pull out central gas vent hose -1- from rubber grommet -2-.
  N27-10405
–  Fold up handles -arrows- upwards and remove battery.
Installing:
  Caution
A loosely fitted battery creates the following dangers:
t  Shortened service life due to damage from vibration (danger of explosion)
t  Damage to the grid plates of the battery
t  Damage to battery housing by securing bracket (possibility of acid leaking, with high consequential costs)
t  Poor crash safety.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When installing observe the following:
–  After installing, check that battery is seated securely.
–  Reconnect battery → Chapter.
  N27-10406
–  Fit central gas vent hose -1- to battery and through rubber grommet -2- in base of battery box.
  Caution
The hose for central venting of the battery must not be kinked, blocked and / or damaged. The battery gases are hazardous to health and explosive. Route the hose carefully and, in doing so, ensure that the battery can vent towards the outside of the vehicle and not into the interior.
–  Tighten threaded connections to specified torques → Chapter.
  Caution
When batteries are disconnected and reconnected, the procedure described in the workshop manual must be strictly observed → Chapter.
