Compression test
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Spark plug socket and extension -3122 B-
t  Puller -T40039-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
t  Compression tester -V.A.G 1763-

Test procedure
  Note
t  Always follow safety precautions → Chapter.
t  Engine oil temperature min. 30 °C.
t  Battery voltage at least 12.7 V
Proceed as follows:
–  Pull off engine cover → Chapter.
   
–  Detach electrical connectors -arrows- at ignition coils.
  N28-10010
–  Remove ignition coils using puller -T40039-.
–  Remove spark plugs with spark plug socket -3122 B-.
–  Check compression using compression tester -V.A.G 1763- and adapter -V.A.G 1763/6-.
  Note
Using compression tester: → Operating instructions.
–  Start engine until tester shows no further pressure increase.
Compression pressures:
  A28-0074
New pressure in barWear limit in bar Permissible difference between cylinders in bar
11.0 … 14.07.0max. 3.0

–  Install spark plugs, specified torque → Chapter.
–  Install ignition coils with output stages → Chapter.
  Note
Events will have been stored in the memory as connectors were disconnected. Read and, if necessary, clear the event memory after the test.
–  Read event memory of engine control unit → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
