Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

    Failure to follow described procedures may lead to a reduction in parking brake efficiency.

1.

On Fox models, remove heat deflector plate, then disconnect parking brake cable from compensator bar.

2.

On all models, remove one wheel bolt, then push adjusting wedge upwards with a suitable screwdriver through wheel bolt hole to back off brake
shoes.

3.

Reinstall wheel bolt and tighten to specifications, then remove grease cap with VW637/2 or equivalent.

4.

Remove cotter pin and axle nut, then pull off brake drum.

5.

Remove spring retainer by pressing it against spring and turning 1/4 turn.

6.

Disconnect brake shoes from anchor pins, then remove return spring.

7.

Disconnect parking brake cable from lever, then the spring for adjusting wedge and upper return spring using suitable pliers.

8.

Remove brake shoes.

9.

Install push rod and brake shoe in a suitable soft jaw vise, then disconnect tensioning spring.

10.

Install ``new'' brake shoe in vise, slide on push rod, then connect tensioning spring on push rod and brake shoe.

11.

Insert adjusting wedge. Lug on adjusting wedge faces backing plate and must be in initial position.

12.

Attach other brake shoe with lever to push rod, then install upper return spring.

13.

Connect parking brake cable onto lever, then place brake shoes onto brake cylinder pistons.

14.

Connect lower return spring onto brake shoes, then mount brake shoes onto retaining pins.

15.

Connect spring for adjusting wedge onto adjusting wedge and brake shoe, then install retaining springs and spring retainers.

16.

Install brake drum and adjust wheel bearings, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints/Wheel
Bearing/Adjustments. 

17.

Apply brake pedal firmly once to set self-adjusting mechanism.

18.

On Fox models, install heat deflector plate and parking brake cable in compensator bar, then adjust parking brake cable, refer to Brakes and
Traction Control/Brakes/Parking Brake System/Adjustments.
